focus on oil & gas North East England offers a significant business opportunity in the oil and gas industry at a time of high worldwide growth in demand and a shortage in capacity. The region has a long and enviable track record with excellent infrastructure and a highly skilled and experienced workforce in this sector. other sectors in the north east of england Assistive Technology for an Ageing World The combination of longer life-spans with the arrival of the post-war ‘baby boomers' at retirement age will result in rapid growth in the older population in most countries over the next two decades. The fastest growth will be in the “very old” (80+ years) age group. This will lead to dramatic increases in the incidence of age related impairments and chronic illnesses. Over 150 automotive companies are located within North East England. There are 93 call centre businesses in North East England with more than 20 employees and up to 150 centres in total, employing over 50,000 people. The sector is still experiencing growth with a 14% increase in jobs predicted between 2004 and 2007. Design Centre North: In 2005, the UK government designated North East England to take the lead on design in the North of England. Over 1000 software and technology companies are based in North East England including leaders in their field such as Sage, Domainnames.com and Leighton Media. North East England has a significant games cluster creating £15 million of turnover and employing nearly 400 people. Fuel Cells and The Hydrogen Economy North East England boasts the only UK facility dedicated to the assisting and promoting of fuel cells in stationary and portable applications. 140,000 people are employed within North East England’s £5 billion healthcare economy. There are thriving company clusters in medical devices, diagnostics and assistive technology for ageing and health. Companies include Sanofi, GSK, Immunodiagnostic Systems, Helena Biosciences, Rocket Medical and Avecia. North East England is at the forefront of R&D into ageing and health. The Institute of Ageing & Health (IAH) at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne is the UK's biggest interdisciplinary research group in this field, the Institute of Human Genetics is the largest of its kind in Europe and the Life Knowledge Park is one of only six 'UK' geneticparks' created to fast-track treatment development for degenerative diseases. Centres of Excellence such as Codeworks ATL and CELS also bring together cross-disciplinary expertise to develop products exclusively for the ageing population. The University of Newcastle upon Tyne is the leading UK Higher Education Institute in government contract and the commercialisation of research undertaking industrially sponsored work in laboratories including Inex: the largest and best equipped public sector micro and nano device fabrication facility in the UK. Inex has already generated millions of pounds of value in technology; spinning out 11 companies since 2002. North East England is home to the world's leading transnational pharmaceutical companies including GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Sanofi Aventis contributing one-third of the UK's GDP generated by pharmaceuticals. There are over 200 chemical, pharmaceutical, speciality and biotechnology companies in North East England. The environmental sector employs over 22,000 people and contributes approximately £1.2 billion to the regional economy. Newcastle Human Embryonic Stem Cell Group are one of only two research units, and the first in the UK, that have been awarded a Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority licence to undertake somatic cell nuclear transfer.
